Pinatunayan ni WBC No. 9 welterweight contender Dennis Laurente na sobra na siya sa pagkahinog para lumaban sa kampeonatong pandaigdig nang patulugin niya sa pamamagitan ng isang suntok si dating Ghanian 147 pounds champion Ayi Bruce sa MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States kahapon.
Pinangakuang mapapasabak sa world title bout sa susunod na taon, pinaglaruan ni Laurente sa unang anim na rounds ang matibay na Ghanaian sa pamamagitan ng mga kombinasyon sa bodega at ulo.
“Surging Filipino welterweight Dennis Laurente (41-4-5, 22KOs) of Palompon, Leyte finished off Ayi Bruce of Ghana (20-5-0, 12KOs) at 57 seconds of the 7th round,“ ayon sa ulat ni boxing writer Dong Secuya ng Philboxing.com. “Laurente dominated the fight all night peppering Bruce with combinations to the body and the head. All three judges had Laurente way ahead at 59-55, 6054, 60-54 before the stoppage.”
Inaasahang aangat si Laurente sa WBC rankings pero malabong labanan siya ng kasalukuyang kampeon na si Floyd Mayweather Jr. kaya kailangang makapasok siya sa talaan ng WBA, IBF at WBO.
Bago ang laban ni Laurente, nanalo rin ang Pinoy boxer na si WBC Asian Council Continental flyweight champion Fernando Lumacad nang mapabagsak sa 2nd at 5th rounds ang Amerikanong si Joseph Rios kaya nanaig sa 8-round unanimous decision.
Ito ang unang panalo ni Lumacad sa US matapos talunin sa 3rd round knockout ng kasalukuyang WBO super bantamweight titlist na si Jorge Arce ng Mexico para sa bakanteng IBF International super flyweight title noong Hunyo 27, 2009 sa Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
“In a super flyweight bout, Fernando Lumacad (25-3-3, 12KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision over Joseph Rios (10-62, 4KOs). The scores were 77-73, 77-74 and 78-72,” ayon sa ulat ng BoxingScene.com. “During the end of the second round, Rios was hurt and took a voluntary knee in the corner. In the fifth, an inside hook sent Rios down for the second time in the fight. Lumacad appeared to coast in the final three rounds of the contest.”
